LEE CO., GA (WALB) - The family of a former Lee County Commissioner and business owner who was gunned down five years ago donates thousands of dollars to the YMCA.
The family of Walter Phelps donated $3500 to the Lee County YMCA through the Walter Phelps Foundation. The money was raised through the Walter Phelps Phun Run in August of last year and will benefit the YMCA's Reach for the Stars summer day camp.
"We thought to carry on that legacy of helping out if we work a little harder for somebody else then his name will continue," said Leighanne Aaron, Walter Phelps' Daughter.
"For them to contribute their time, their energy and their resources to make a difference with the kids in our community that's priceless," said Dan Gillan, Albany Area YMCA CEO.
Phelps died a month later after being shot and robbed in his business P&P Hardware in 2010. Jordan Harris was sentenced to life in prison without the chance of parole in January.
