Atlanta man suing South Georgia sheriff

SUMTER CO., GA (WALB) - An Atlanta man is suing the Sumter County Sheriff and one of his deputies after he says he was wrongfully thrown in prison. Giscard Minyobe was arrested in January of 2014 and charged with financial transaction fraud.

He was held in jail for 3 months without bond because he is not an American citizen. District Attorney Plez Hardin dismissed the charges in April of 2014, but his attorney said the damage had already been done.

"His freedom was taken away from not by mistake but willfully and intentionally by officers who are there to protect and serve. I believe that the facts and the jury will see that this was a big miscarriage of justice," said Attorney Harry Daniels.

Sheriff Pete Smith tells WALB he was not aware of the lawsuit yet. A county attorney has not responded to our requests yet.
