Lowndes man arrested for machine gun, pot

LOWNDES CO., GA (WALB) - Denarelle Charles Benton, who lives on Timber Drive, Lake Park, was arrested Wednesday afternoon, for having a rifle that had been altered to fire like a machine gun. The weapon fired continuously while the trigger was held.

Detectives went to investigate complaints about the house, detectives noticed a smell of burnt marijuana in the room. They found a small quantity of marijuana and an Intratec .9 millimeter handgun, with a magazine, and a screw on barrel extension.

It had been altered and was fully automatic allowing it to fire as long as the trigger is held. They checked his background, and saw that Benton, 30, was previously convicted of a felony and not allowed to have any firearm. Official are testing the gun to see if it has been used in other crimes.

He will appear in the Lowndes County Magistrate Court Thursday afternoon for an arraignment hearing where a bond will be considered for possession of marijuana and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Sheriff Chris Prine thanked citizens who took time to report what they believed to be suspicious. Their actions led to the arrest of Benton, who used to live in Colquitt, and the firearm being removed from the streets.
