Bike rider badly hurt in Ty Ty

TY TY, GA (WALB) - A Ty Ty man is in serious condition after being hit while riding his bike on US 82. 51-year-old Walter Joiner hit 60-year-old Eddie Blackmon just before 9:00 Tuesday night.

Blackmon was hit at the intersection of 82 and Davis St. Other bicycle riders remind drivers to look out for cyclists on the roads.

"Drivers need to be encouraged to be on the alert for cyclists at all times. Cyclists are by law allowed to be on the same roads as the cars. Cars by law are required to keep 3 feet of space between the edge of their vehicle and the riders on the road," said Bicycle rider Bret Wagenhorst

Wagenhorst says it's also important for riders to wear reflective gear and try to avoid major roads. Blackmon was taken to Archbold before being airlifted to Shands Hospital in Gainseville, Florida.

Troopers say warm weather like we've had will bring out more pedestrians. They encourage you to keep an eye out for cyclists, runners, and anyone else on the roads.

Driving the speed limit and paying attention are two things troopers say you should always do.

"Just try to slow down. Pay attention to the road. Have your headlights on anytime there's fog or inclement weather--if it's raining or dark," said GSP Corporal Peter Lukas.

Lukas says bikers should go with traffic and runners should go against traffic.
