TIFTON, GA (WALB) - Most of the grass on the 2020 Olympic fields in Tokyo, Japan could be from right here in Southwest Georgia.
Representatives from the largest Japanese sod company looked at grass grown at the UGA Tifton Campus. Chubu has licenses to grow two different sods cultivated by UGA researchers.
The grass will be in stadiums for the 2019 Rugby World Cup and the 2020 Olympics.
"It's satisfying to know that the research, the time, the effort, the testing, long term testing, diverse locations where we tested around the world, that when we release one, it's good," said Dr. Wayne Hanna with the University of Georgia.
Dr. Hanna says Tift grass was also on most of the fields at the 2010 and 2014 World Cups.
