SMITHVILLE, GA - Some South Georgia Vietnam War Veterans are commemorating the 50th anniversary of the start of the war.
68-year-old Denzile Harrell comes from a family of veterans. He served in the Army for six years and was a Chinook helicopter pilot in Vietnam in 1968 to 1969. Harrell says he's still bothered by how veterans were treated when they came back from Vietnam.
"You know they were against the warrior and I don't understand that because we were just doing what the politicians told us to do," said Denzile Harrell, Vietnam Veteran. "Thank God that we are treating the veterans a little bit differently than when we got treated."
Hundreds of marines arrived in Vietnam on March 8, 1965 to help the South Vietnam Government defeat communist forces. The last U.S. troops left in March 1973. More than 58,000 US troops lost their lives in the war.
