VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

A nationally recognized advocate for helping fight against animal cruelty was in Valdosta Monday to share her story.

Monday night, Donna Lawrence and her dog Susie were scheduled to speak to around 80 people at Austin's Cattle Company in Valdosta.

Tuesday, the pair was scheduled to visit students at Lowndes County and Valdosta City schools and was also scheduled to visit patients at South Georgia Medical Center.

Donna was severely mauled by a dog that became overly aggressive from neglect and Susie was set on fire. Valdosta-Lowndes County Humane Society board member Joe Paoletti said Donna and Susie's story sends an important message.

"The importance for the community to become a more benevolent and a better community in reference to addressing the issue of animal cruelty," Paoletti said.
