ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The 2015 Albany Marathon got underway at 7:00AM in downtown Albany. The 9th Annual Albany Marathon and Half Marathon are drawing 1,500 runners from 34 states and two countries.
They are supported by 1700 volunteers to help with water stations, and serve as road marshals.
"You can plug in bib numbers, and search by bib numbers, so once they are all up you can search for somebody's bib number and be able to find pictures of your family, friend or yourself," said Albany Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Rashelle Beasley.
Kimberly Decker is a marathon runner from Kansas, and she has good things to say about Albany's Marathon, when she ran last time: "We lived here last year and came out and enjoyed the race so much we decided to come out again this year."
This event attracts people from all over the county, like David Weber and Mark Sturwold, who are running marathons in every state.
"We couldn't stop with one so we've been traveling to run different marathons in different places and we are trying to do one in every state. So we've been working on the project for over 10 years, and we are getting there," said Weber.
So now they are seeing the country one state at a time.
"We've been to some great places like down here in Albany. We live in Chicago and we've just been in some cool places around the country that we probably would have never have gone to," said Sturwold.
The weather is on everyone's mind, and it's going to be great in 2015. We're looking at a low of freezing, and a high in 60s under clear skies.
"We appreciate all the people who put this together, and that's why we want to bring out the southern hospitality, and make sure that they want to come back year after year," said Rashelle Beasley.
Beasley said this event would not be this great without the support of the community. "I want to thank the community and thank all the business owners for being so supportive of this great event."
