BAINBRIDGE, GA (WALB) -  Older adults in Bainbridge prove that age is just a number.

The Silver Sneakers program is helping them stay in shape.

Joe Deverteuil has been a member for nearly six years at the Bainbridge YMCA.

He said, “I'll be 80-years-old this year.  So I have to keep my muscles moving because too many people sit around and they wonder why they can't use things.  It's because they haven't been using them all along.”

He says each workout session is like a family reunion.

“It's been a lot of fun.  A lot of friends in here, and we just have a good time together,” said Deverteuil.

A fun atmosphere that improves members' flexibility, balance, and overall fitness.

Instructor Paula Grollman said, “It's very rewarding to me.  And that's the reason I love doing the class.  It's making things better for people so they can do their daily activities.”

YMCA employees said they've seen a big increase in the number of people taking advantage of Silver Sneakers, but they don't think it's new year's resolutions that triggered the increase.

Bainbridge YMCA Interim Acting CEO Crystal Hines said, “There's been a huge influx of new approvals coming in through insurance companies.  A lot of have moved into transition after they've turned 62, as of January 1.”

Trainers said these classes aren't as easy as you might think.

Each exercise is challenging enough to break a sweat.

Deverteuil joked, “My favorite one? The last one we do every day.  Then I can leave!”

YMCA trainers encourage more folks to see if they're eligible to take advantage of this program.
