BACONTON, GA (WALB) - Wednesday is Georgia Walk To School day, an event that helps promote safe routes for children.
The event began back in 2000 and since hundreds of schools have participated, including schools here in southwest Georgia. North Mitchell County Elementary gathered dozens of students this morning to kick off the event.
They wore pedometers to track their steps and discussed the importance of health benefits of walking can provide.
Staff members say parents can also play a role by teaching their children safety habits early on.
"Talk to their children about safety when they're walking. Make sure they are using cross walks when they do have to cross the road from the sidewalks and looking both ways for traffic," Dallas said.
The event is celebrated in over 40 countries.
