The city of Smithville will hold a special election after a city council member resigns.
80 year-old Willie Mae Davis resigned after being arrested last month. She's accused of raising a pen and threatening to stab a deacon during a service at Green Grove Baptist Church.
Davis pled not guilty to disorderly conduct during a hearing Tuesday.
In her resignation letter, Davis says she has an inoperable brain tumor and her doctor advised her not to work any longer.
"it's certainly what she felt like and I think it's fair to say what the other council members felt like was the best solution for everybody concerned and the city of Smithville," said Tommy Coleman, the Smithville City Attorney.
The special election will be held in June. Whoever is elected will serve the remainder of the term for Ward 2, which expires at the end of the year.
