Cordele woman pleads to insurance fraud

CORDELE, GA (WALB) - Jan Smith, a former cashier at Harvey's in Cordele, pled guilty to felony insurance fraud, and two felony counts of making false statements.

Smith, 48, was arrested and charged with workers' compensation fraud in February of 2014, pled guilty in the Superior Court of Crisp County on Wednesday.

Smith filed a false police report on August of 2013 with the Cordele Police Department claiming she had been assaulted by her supervisor while working.

Smith then filed a workers' compensation claim with the State Board claiming she suffered bodily injury as a result of the alleged assault. Based on evidence obtained during the investigation conducted by the Enforcement Division it was determined Smith had lied and fabricated the allegations against the store supervisor and no assault occurred.

Smith was sentenced to five years of probation on each felony count to run concurrently, and must pay the State Board of Workers' Compensation's Enforcement Division $1,850. for investigative costs associated with the case.
