Editorial: 50th Anniversary of Selma

As we recognize the 50th anniversary of Selma, we reflect on the role that South Georgia, particularly Albany, played in the civil rights movement.

On November 17, 1961… a group of local black leaders met at the home of an Albany dentist and organized the Albany Movement.

The three Selma to Montgomery marches in 1965 were part of the Selma Voting Rights Movement and led to the passage that year of the Voting Rights Act.

This anniversary is an important reminder of the sacrifices that were made for the right to vote, and should serve as a lesson that we should never take this right for granted.
