Americus city council, police chief meeting on new plans

AMERICUS, GA (WALB) -

The Americus city council will have a special meeting Thursday to decide what's next for the police department. Chief Brian Carney addressed the council earlier this month with a list of desired improvements.

They include new cars, more personnel, and higher salaries for officers. The council and mayor will discuss those requests with the chief Thursday.

"We can't really do that in a meeting such as they had. The administrative briefing meeting was when the chief first brought it up so this is just an opportunity to really dial in on all of those issues and see what we can do going forward," said Interim Americus Chief Administrative Officer Billy Beckett.

Beckett says the council should set up a 3 to 5 year plan to help improve the department.
