Albany veterans presented The Patriots Pen to students

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Albany veterans presented The Patriots Pen and Voice of Democracy awards Tuesday night.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 27-85 awarded students from St. Teresa's Westover High and Mitchell County high with plaques and cash awards for their essays on democracy and patriotism.

The VFW also honored a teacher with a Citizenship award.

"It's important to me because it helps to instill to help to take it and instill. And, see what a student nowadays what democracy to them, what patriotism means to them. And be able to express it in writing,” said Kenneth LaFrenz, Banquet Chairman.

The number of entries was down this year.

Organizers hope to get participation back up next year.

Patriots Pen

First Place - Khrstyn Bias, St. Teresa's

Second Place - Joshua Lumgdone, St. Teresa's

Third Place - Julianne Estur, St. Teresa's

Voice of Democracy

First Place - Joshua Moore, Mitchell Co.

Second Place - Sahaara Bryant, Westover

Third Place - Jocilin Moore, Mitchell Co.

Citizenship Award: Tracy Woodcock, St. Teresa's teacher
