Child ignites major blaze

Chief Carswell Chief Carswell
ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Fire Investigators say a four year old child started the blaze that caused major damage to a South Albany home late Tuesday night.

Firefighters were called to the duplex in the 500 block of Cherry Avenue just before midnight. The duplex was fully involved in flames.

Brenda Parkes and her family were out safe, and the family in the other duplex was not home.

Albany Fire Chief James Carswell said that Investigators say the four year old boy was playing with a lighter, setting a trash can and love seat ablaze.

There was an estimated $70,000 fire damage in the Parkes' duplex, and smoke damage in the other side.

The American Red Cross was called in to help both displaced families.
