More than 70,000 still without power in Ga. after ice storm

ATLANTA (AP) - Utility companies say more than 70,000 Georgia customers remain without power as crews work to clear downed trees and power lines.

Georgia's electric membership cooperatives reported that about 57,500 customers throughout the state were without power as of 5 a.m. Wednesday after an ice storm coated much of northeast Georgia. A Georgia Power outage map also said more than 13,800 of its customers were without power before dawn Wednesday.

The electric cooperatives said in a statement that restoring power has been challenging since many areas have been impassable and trees and debris need to be removed.

The winter storm also caused some flight delays at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
