ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Smokeless tobacco users are encouraged to Ditch the Snuff for Better Stuff during a week long campaign called the Great American Spit Out.
It happens on Thursday, February 19.
Chewing tobacco can lead to gum disease, discoloration and loss of teeth, along with oral cancer and many other health problems.
It also has 3 to 4 times more nicotine than a cigarette.
Officials say many young athletes start using chewing tobacco, believing it is less harmful than other tobacco products.
"Our mission is to make sure people are educated about the harmful side effects of all tobacco products and realize there are resources for those who are currently using those products, so that they can stop using," said Kimberly Scott with Cancer Coalition of South Georgia.
The best defense is never to start, and while the habit can be hard to break, there is help.
