Editorial: South Georgia's Own

Last Week, the town of Ocilla celebrated the memory of a native son whose songs you've heard, but didn't know was a south Georgian. Dave Prater was half the Sam and Dave duo who had some big soul hits in the 1960's.

But there are many accomplished people from our area, and we ought to tout them.

Lee County natives Luke Bryan, Buster Posey, and Phillip Phillips are mentioned in the news frequently.

Albanians Deion Branch and Ricardo Lockette have about half a dozen super bowls between them.

Cairo produced Jackie Robinson, AND Bill Stanfill, a member of the undefeated Miami Dolphins team.

60's music legend Otis Redding was from Dawson, Billy Joe Royal is from Valdosta, and Albany produced Ray Charles, AND Ray Stevens.

Civil right activist Hosea Williams was from Attapulgus.

Legendary actress Joanne Woodward was from Thomasville, as is Heisman trophy winner Charlie Ward.

Former NBA star Tree Rollins is a Cordele native.

Former Denver Broncos coach Dan Reeves is from Americus.

Their hometowns should tour their accomplishments. These high-achievers are a beacon of encouragement for our youth, demonstrating that you CAN make it to the big time!
