Americus city council hears police chief's requests

AMERICUS, GA (WALB) - The Americus police chief is requesting new vehicles and more officers for the department. Chief Brian Carney told the city council about upgrades he thinks are necessary for the department.

Among them, several new police cars and up to 9 new officers. The interim chief administrative officer says the council will set up a plan to hopefully satisfy his needs.

"But it's not going to be an immediate 'bang, ok you got a problem, now we're going to immediately address it', but I do think the council can find a systematic way to address the most urgent needs quickly," said Americus Interim CAO Billy Beckett.

Beckett says the most important need to any city is public safety, so it will be a priority to get this done.
