THOMAS CO., GA (WALB) - The Thomas County Sheriff's Office wants to make sure you don't fall for scams this tax season.
Several people in the county have reported getting threatening and aggressive phone calls from scammers claiming to be from the IRS.
They say you need to purchase a money card to avoid heavy fines or jail time for back taxes.
But the real IRS will never call you asking for money or personal information.
Captain Steve Jones said, “If you have any doubt about the credibility, or you think it could be credible, ask the person for their name and number, their ID number or badge number, and then offer to call them back.”
He said you'll be able to identify scammers when they refuse to provide this information.
