Florists prep for Valentine's Day rush

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Millions of Americans are getting ready for one of the most expensive gift giving days. Valentine's. Shops are gearing up for the huge crowds this weekend.

An online survey shows that both men and women want chocolate, wine, and food for the big day and it's likely that you can get two out of three at flower shops.

When February 14th strikes, the abundance of chocolates, balloons, and bears litter stores and flower shops.

And although some of us have the chance to indulge, Valentine's isn't the most popular choice for favorite holiday among florists.

"This is our roughest week," said The Flower Basket manager Tibbie Watson. "I mean, I like Valentine's Day but being a florist and being in the business we are we never get to enjoy it."

But that doesn't stop them from pulling all the stops to make your loved one feel special.

"We have plenty of snack baskets, gorgeous bloom and plants, balloons, teddy bears," said Watson. "And of course the day of we always try to help those walk in customers, those last minute guys because we don't want you to go home empty handed."

And most of you wont, according to an online poll, the average person will spend over $100 for the day of love. That's about $18 billion nationwide.

But who says Valentine's Day is just for couples?

"Its for children, its for family, its for friends," said shopper Pat Bullard

Bullard took her time to carefully to pluck what would be a memorable gift for her grand-daughter.

"My daughter and her husband went to China a year ago and adopted her, and I got a very special Valentine for her."

Whether you have a date or keeping it low key with family, it's a time to share those special moments with those you care about most.

Shop early, the prices of roses will go up as we head closer to the holiday.
