William Thomas Neal, Jr. (W.T.) 88, of Leesburg died Wednesday February 4, 2015 at Willson Hospice House.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday February 7, 2015 at the First Baptist Church of Albany with interment to follow in the Crown Hill Cemetery.
In 1980, W.T. Neal bought Railway Freight from his brother (H.D. Neal) who originally opened it in 1969. As the business continued to grow W.T. Neal and two of his sons, Jeff and Steve Neal expanded to a second location in Americus Georgia. Jeff and Steve took over Railway Freight in the early 90's and have added 2 locations, one in Tifton and just opened a store in Cordele.
Mr. Neal was born on October 22, 1926 in Adel to the late W.T. Neal, Sr. and Katherine (Katie Mae) Underwood. He grew up in Columbus, GA and graduated from Columbus High School. Mr. Neal was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Merchant Marines. He became a successful businessman in Columbus and later in Albany, where he owned and operated Railway Freight.
Mr. Neal was active in a number of civic and charitable organizations and was active in the church throughout his life, most recently at First Baptist Church of Albany, where he served as a deacon and volunteered with The Lord's Pantry.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Mary Lee Seagraves Neal of Leesburg; three siblings, Haywood Neal of Tifton; Jo Ann Neal Garrett (Bob) of Anderson, S.C.; Edward Neal of Columbus; sister-in-law, Kay Wood Neal of Macon; four sons, William Thomas Neal III (Judy) of Stone Mountain; Larry David Neal (Judy) of Perry, FL.; Jon Steven Neal (Anne) of Albany and Jeffery Lee Neal (Margene) of Albany; six grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth Carmichael (Nick) of Peachtree City; Kelly Marie Mullins (Chad) of Leesburg; Claire Elizabeth Burke (Allen) of Atlanta; Leslie Anne Martin (Thomas) of Atlanta; Justin Daniel Neal of Sandy Springs and Laura Leigh Whaley (Kevin) of Albany; 10 great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents Mr. Neal was preceded in death by a brother, James Gerald Neal and a sister-in-law, Polly Arnold Neal.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Kimbrell-Stern.
