VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - State probation officers were trying to question Wendell Baisden Tuesday night when he launched a car forward from the passenger's seat and took off running.

About 8 p.m. Tuesday, the Valdosta Police Department responded to the area of Lowndes Drive and Pineview Drive to assist Valdosta State Probation officers conducting a check on one of their probationers, Wendell Baisden.

When officers approached a car in which Baisden was sitting in the front passenger seat and opened the passenger door, Baisden leaned over toward the driver's side, put the car into gear, and pushed the accelerator.

The probation officer was struck by the car door and fell to the ground. When the probation officer fell, "[Baisden] jumped out and ran, so the car didn't go anywhere," explained Valdosta Police Department Lt. Aaron Kirk.

VPD Officers arrived and checked the area, but could not locate Baisden. The person in the driver‘s seat remained on scene and complied with the officers. According to the Valdosta State Probation Office, the officer was not seriously injured.

Officials with the Valdosta State Probation Office will be working with Detectives from the VPD to obtain arrest warrants on Baisden.

"We help out state probation a lot of times whenever they ask for our assistance and don't mind helpin' 'em," said Lt. Kirk. "Not very often do we have an assault like this though."

Anyone having any further information regarding this crime or any other crime is urged to contact the Valdosta Police Department at 229-293-3145 or can remain anonymous at 229-293-3091.
