Teen indicted for making false KJ statement

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

A Lowndes County teen was facing an indictment Tuesday for making a false statement related to the death of 17 year-old Kendrick Johnson.

19 year-old Dalton Ray Chauncey was indicted on January 30th. He is accused of telling Lowndes County Sheriff's Office investigators in July, 2014 that he overheard two people talking about causing Johnson's death.

Investigators could not locate the two people, and Chauncey later admitted to making the story up.

Johnson's body was found inside a rolled up gym mat in the Lowndes High gym in January, 2013. The sheriff's office concluded his death was an accident, but Johnson's family believes he was murdered.

U.S. District Attorney Michael Moore began an investigation into Johnson's death in October, 2013. As of Tuesday, there was no word on when that investigation would be completed.
