Sheriff provides safe spot for Craigslist transactions

TIFT CO., GA (WALB) - Tift County Sheriff Gene Scarborough reached out to residents on Facebook as soon as he heard about the deaths of the Runions, killed during a Craigslist meet-up in Telfair County.

He offers advice, warning Craigslist users of interactions with strangers. He says it's especially not a good idea to meet in private locations.

"It's just devastating for that to happen to these people that are just trying to make an honest transaction and wound up dead."

So, to make sure these deadly interactions don't keep happening, Sheriff Scarborough is also offering up an alternative option to meeting anyone on your own.

The Sheriff wants you to know that you can make those transactions outside the Tift County Sheriff's Office, in the parking lot, so that you feel safe. "They don't have to be from Tift County, but if it is near or convenient for them. They are welcome to meet in our parking lot."

He says during the meet ups authorities will check the products you could be purchasing, making sure they're not stolen or fake.

"And I think by telling them, meet me at some law enforcement center or whatever, that will ward off any criminal activity."

He adds in the social media post, he believes there's not a Georgia Sheriff who wouldn't provide this type of help to keep their people safe.
