ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A new transportation bill proposed by republican leaders in Georgia would do away with gas sales tax but add excise tax on the front end of 29.2 cents a gallon.

An excise tax would be most likely raise gas prices at the pump.

A billion dollars a year would go towards improving transportation in the state.

Nyoka Alexius says we are all paying too much in taxes. “and now I see they are inching up 2 or 3 cents every day or whatever so I'm not in agreement on paying taxes on anything.”

Edward Ballard disagrees. He says“As you can see I'm a veteran and I knew this was going to happen but hey let enjoy it while we got it. “

The legislation also aims to raise funding to recapitalize the Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank, which provides loans to local governments for transit improvements.
