Albany city commissioners approved the final phase of a major overhaul to the Water Gas and Light Commission.
The changes to the city charter will change the name of the WG&L Commission to the Albany Utility Board. The utility will be able to expand services into areas outside of Albany, even outside Dougherty County. The change will also make it easier for the utility board to handle daily operations.
"They'll come back to the city commission for final approval as on the budget, but now the utility board can take action to run the utility on a day to day basis," said Tom Berry, Interim City Manager.
The city previously consolidated many WG&L departments with their city counterparts reducing the utility work force. The five members of the current WG&L Commission will now serve on the Albany Utility Board. They will still report to the City Commission.
