McRae, GA (WALB) - Investigators say they have arrested a man named as a suspect connected to a Cobb County couple who went missing after driving across the state to check out a Craigslist advertisement.
Ronnie "Jay" Adrian Towns was taken into custody Monday morning after he turned himself in to the Telfair County Sheriff's Office.
According to a statement by investigators, Towns turned himself in after investigators were able to work out a deal with his family.
Sheriff Chris Steverson said they had two active arrest warrants out for Towns. He was wanted for making false statements to investigators and for criminal attempt to commit theft by deception.
Officials said "credible information" led them to focus their search in the Jacksonville, GA area.
Authorities also said they received numerous tips and leads that they have been looking into. Sheriff Steverson said Towns was the last person to contact the family. He said the search and rescue mission will continue and "if the couple is in Telfair County, they will be found."
According to a report, Elrey "Bud" Runion and his wife June traveled from Marietta to McRae in response to an ad for a 1966 Ford Mustang on Craigslist.
Family members called authorities on Thursday after they could not contact the couple. Since then, they have put together a Facebook page to help in the search for the couple.
Bud and June Runion are in their late 60's. They were last seen traveling in a 2003 champagne-colored GMC Envoy.
Investigators have been canvassing the areas around McRae with helicopters to aid in the search for the Runions.
Anyone with further information is urged to call the Telfair County Sheriff's Office at 229-868-6621.
