MITCHELL CO., GA (WALB) -

Fire investigators now believe faulty wiring from a water heater is the cause of fire that burned down a Mitchell County church Saturday night.

Members at Beautiful Light Baptist Church in Baconton were suppose to be inside for service Sunday, but instead their watching the remains of their church smolder to the ground.

" Although, I wasn't able to have church today, but at least I put on the outfit that I said I was going to wear. It's sad," said Rev. Rogers L. Chatmon

It's the church where 73-year-old Mary W. Marcus has been attending her entire life.

" It's sad. But this the second time before it was a tornado now it's fire," said Mary W. Marcus, member.

The 100-year-old church caught fire around 11 o'clock Saturday night. Fire Departments from Camilla, Baconton and Autry State Prison put out the flames. Church officials are now seeking help from the community to get back on their feet.

" Moving this debris out the way, to some funds," said Rev. Rogers L. Chatmon

" I would like to see it go back up, better than it was. We hoping and praying that somebody will come back in and help us." said Mary W. Marcus

That someone could be Marcus's grandson Montrey Williams who came to see the damage for himself.

" I'm going to get the church back to where it's suppose to be. Because I do landscaping and construction. So I'm going to get it back right and I ain't gone stop until I reach my limit," said Montrey Williams.

Even through tragedy, members say they are hopeful that their church will be rebuild.

"Whatever happened, it happened for a reason, and all of this is in God's hand," said Rev. Rogers L Chatmon

"I got faith in God, because he got it all in his hands," said Mary W. Marucs.
