PELHAM, GA (WALB) - Most Pelham residents were all smiles and eager to get into the brand new Walmart Neighborhood Market on Barrow Avenue early Wednesday morning.
"I think Walmart is going to be just great here," said Faye Clements, Resident. "Right here, in Pelham and it's going to be very convenient for people that are on the go."
The new store created 30 jobs and now provides produce pharmacy and gas to its customers. It's one of several new Neighborhood Markets Walmart has opened up in Southwest Georgia, including another that also opened up in Pearson Wednesday.
But not everyone is glad to see the new market pop up. When planning began on this new Walmart, we spoke to Joy Mobley, who lives next to the new store. She and her neighborhood friends contested the construction in her neighborhood at the zoning hearing and city council meeting.
"I just don't want to live by a huge store, right in the middle of my neighborhood, when they could have located on Highway 19."
As soon as she discovered the store would officially be built, she decided to put her home up for sale. She says she'll likely be leaving Pelham for good. "I love my people in Pelham but I don't like having Walmart in our neighborhood."
As for city officials, they think despite the response from some residents, the community seems to be embracing the store well. "I think now that we can see what it's doing and we can see that it is, it's not going to be an eye sore,"James Eubanks Mayor Pro Tem. "It will be a nice asset to this community and to this street."
The store will now be open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m on Sunday.
