Parents need some control over kids' cell phones

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Parents are encouraged to set guidelines for their children, who may be new cell phone users.

If you've given your child a cell phone for Christmas, AT&T officials want to make sure it's a positive experience for everyone.

They suggest parents set boundaries early on, discuss the do's and don'ts of texting, and become familiar with privacy settings on social media.

"Normally the more private, the less inappropriate content that child, or that teen is likely to see. So we encourage that. You don't want to make it a negative experience for them, but you do want to protect them," said Courtney Brinson of  AT&T Georgia.

Parents can also enable certain controls and location-based services to find their child, or block certain numbers.

You can also track your child's wireless usage to control costs.
