ALBANY, GA (WALB) - State officials gathered in the Capitol to celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. ahead of Monday's holiday honoring the civil rights leader.
In South Georgia, political figure Rashad Taylor will be the speaker at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day event at Hutto Middle School in Bainbridge.
The theme of this year's MLK Observance is "Improving the Quality of Life for the Citizens of Decatur County," with topics covering community relations, education, jobs, healthcare and housing.
For almost 15 years, Taylor has worked in local and national political campaigns and policy making.
He served two terms in the Georgia House of Representatives where he was elected Vice Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking leadership position in the House.
During President Barrack Obama's 2012 campaign, Taylor was appointed to serve on the Platform Committee for the Democratic National Convention.
The event is scheduled for 11:45 follows an opening ceremony at the Decatur County Courthouse at 9:45 a.m. and the annual parade from the courthouse to the HMS gymnasium at 10:30 a.m.
There is a Youth Showcase today at Mathis City Auditorium in Valdosta at 11:00 a.m., with guest speakers Shelbra McKnight and Jessica Whylly.
There will be a group gathering outside the City Hall in Sylvester at 11:00 for MLK day.
The MLK Day of Service is going on today in Albany in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity, at 915 Willow Oak Court, just off Newton Road. Just show up wearing work clothes if you want to help.
WALB is airing the MLK celebration from the Albany Civic Center tonight at 7:00 on WALB NBC and ABC.
