TIFTON, GA (WALB) - A former Tifton Police chief is being honored with a new scholarship in his name.
The Tift Rotary Club named a new G-E-D scholarship in honor of Jim Smith who served 24 years as the head of city's police department.
He also helped create the The Literacy Volunteers of Tifton back in 1987.
The group joined teachers and officers to help kids and adults get their education and stay out of trouble.
Smith says he is proud to have the fund named in his honor.
"I'm a firm believer in education," Smith said. "And I'm a firm believer in helping people that don't have the chance to help themselves. And that's what it's all about."
