ALBANY, GA (WALB) - There's a lot of debate over President Obama's proposal to offer free tuition to community college.
Darton State College assistant professor of Economics Aaron Johnson believes it would boost enrollment at Darton and Albany Tech, but that might not translate into gains at 4-year colleges.
He said if all states participate... only about three-fourths of the cost would be paid by the federal government.
Participating states would be expected pick up the rest.
"Does that mean they are going to start taking away funding from healthcare services? Will they start delaying transportation projects? So these are all factors that could say this policy is a negative. A strength of this proposal that I see if it will minimize student loan debt," said Johnson.
Students would have to maintain certain academic requirements.
President Obama did not give further details on how the plan would be funded.
