ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A new quail hunting organization in Albany is hosting it's first ever quail hunting event this week. The Southwest Georgia chapter of Quail Forever is hoping for a successful turnout to the quail hunt invitational..
Quail hunting events have been in Albany for years, several different organizations have invited not only residents but those out of state and even celebrities to Albany's attraction. Last year we had big name stars such as Kevin Costner participate.
The Southwest Georgia Chapter of Quail Forever will kick off their first hunt Thursday. Coordinator Bo Henry feels it's a tradition that he along with the rest of the community can keep alive.
Henry says this allows youth hunters to get a taste of what the sport entails while stimulating Albany business. All the money raised in the event will stay locally and be contributed to multiple organizations such as Tall Timbers, a group that conducts research and study of quail habitat.
"It's a great thing. I think it's one of the best things for an economic drivers, people coming into this area that there is quail hunting," Henry said. "I think it helps our local businesses, it helps local plantations, it helps the entire economy of this area around this time of year from the airport on."
Henry says he hopes this will be as successful as other hunting. He feels one of the most important things Quail Forever has is their ability to focus and on conservation, ensuring youth understands the true sport behind the hunt.
The event begins Thursday at 1 P.M. at Merry Acres Inn and Event Center for registration and check in.
