LEESBURG, GA (WALB) - Friends and family are standing strong for Amber Purifoy as she recovers at a Tennessee hospital.
Purifoy was shot in the head on Friday, while visiting family in Kingsport.
Since being admitted in critical condition, Purifoy has shown signs of improvement.
"Her mother was finally able to see her," Jake Roberts, Purifoy's boyfriend, said. "And, Amber did squeeze her mother's hand and show support."
Roberts and family friend, Laurie West, are working hard to raise money for the family.
"Our goal at this point is to try to raise $15,000, so that they are not having to be concerned with the financial aspect of it," West said. "The traveling back and forth, the hotel room while they're there, food and just things that so quickly add up. "
It's not the first time Purifoy has faced tragedy.
She was severely burned in a house fire back in 2012.
Roberts is hopeful she will get through this just like she got through the fire.
And the support from the community will be a big help.
"It's overwhelming," Roberts said. "We praise God for the money that we have raised. And, it really warms your heart to know how much a community can come together and support for a tragic time like this."
So far, West and Roberts have raised $1,300, with plans to hold a bake sale and golf tournament in the works.
Roberts also said there will be T-shirts and wristbands for sale, in support of Purifoy.
