Troopers want driver to surrender

LEE CO., GA (WALB) -

Dougherty County authorities are looking for 19-year old Nicholas Smith, after troopers say he left the scene of a trooper-involved crash.

They say Smith, who was driving a 1995 Honda Civic pulled out in front of a GSP trooper in a Dodge Charger at the Homerun Foods on Philema just after 10 o'clock Sunday night.

After the crash, Smith ran away. Troopers say leaving the scene is not worth the seriousness of the charges.

"When you leave the scene, you're going to be charged with fleeing or attempting to elude or leaving the scene of an accident, and those fines are a whole lot more, plus it suspends your license also," Sgt. Shawn Urquhart with the Georgia State Patrol.

Urquhart says a passenger in the civic was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Trooper Jack Stripling was not hurt.
