Kirk to serve as deputy whip

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The Georgia General Assembly opens Monday, and a new state senator from our area will have a leadership role.

Newly elected state Senator Greg Kirk from Americus will be sworn in on Monday.

He was named a deputy whip in the upper chamber.

He'll be responsible for gauging support for legislation from a dozen of his fellow Senators.

"There have been other times I have been there for meetings and so forth. I guess the way I handle myself made Senator Gooch, who is our Majority Whip, asked me to serve in this capacity with him. So, I have very honored."

We'll have live coverage from Atlanta Monday on the opening day of the session and the inauguration of Governor Nathan Deal for his second term.
