MOULTRIE, GA (WALB) - After four Colquitt County churches were burglarized in a week, Sheriff's Investigators office have arrested John Stanley Griner and Michael Allen McMurphy.
The men have been charged with four counts of second Degree Burglary, and Vandalism to a Place of Worship.
Deputies nearly caught the men in the act, but they gathered enough evidence to identify them, and recover many of the stolen items, when they arrested Griner and McMurphy. Both Griner and McMurphy have previous burglary convictions.
From this, investigators were able to develop the two suspects. A search of their residence resulted in their arrest and the discovery of items stolen from multiply churches.
The sheriff's office has recovered stolen property from Autryville Baptist Church, Oakdale Baptist Church, Friendship Alliance Church and Cavalry Baptist Church. These churches are the ones for which the charges originate. The vandalism charges stem from the extensive damage that the suspects did to them.
Chief Investigator Lt. Shawn Bostick said investigators were glad to these men before they were able to make future thefts, because often individuals who will result to stealing from places of worship show little restrain in what crimes they will commit.
