VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

A South Georgia credit union based in Valdosta helped University of Florida Shands Hospital Wednesday morning help care for children.

South Eastern Federal Credit Union presented a $5,000 check to the hospital's Children's Miracle Network program. The credit union raised the money through the month of December by participating in the state wide annual "Credit Unions for Kids" holiday campaign.

"We feel like it's important not only to give back to the community but to participate in the overall well being of the people in the community, particularly the children," said South Eastern Federal Credit Union President and CEO Mike Gudley.

In December 2013, the credit union raised $3,500 for the program.

UF Shands Children's Miracle Network representative Stephanie Nicholas, who accepted the check at the presentation Wednesday morning, said fifty percent of the money will be used for pediatric research and the other fifty percent for equipment the hospital needs to care for the children.
