Editorial: Albany teen wrongfully jailed

An Albany man will get $25,000 from the city because he was wrongfully jailed for 16 months.

Three years ago, then 17-year-old Richard Hayes was locked up on gang participation charges.

He was held in jail for 16 months, even though the city knew he was not guilty of the charges against him.

It's cases like this one that shake the public's faith and trust in our law enforcement and judicial systems.

This case shouldn't simply end with a payout of taxpayers' money.

Someone should be held accountable.

We call on police and prosecutors to examine this case to determine how and why this happened.

Whether it was because of apathy, incompetence or maliciousness, this travesty in justice is inexcusable.
