The only African American chief in the history of the Albany Fire Department was laid to rest today.
Chief Henry Fields died Sunday. Officials with the Albany Fire Department were pallbearers at his funeral at Jordan Grove Baptist Church in Leesburg and burial at Riverside Cemetery in Albany. Friends say Chief Fields was a leader in the community.
"I remember that Chief Fields was not just a great Fire Chief, but he was a good community figure and a father to many in diverse ways," said Rev. Joseph Howard, Friend. "As a youngster in the community, he was that father figure who made us go home and made us do the right thing."
"We know Chief Fields will be looking over the Albany Fire Department," said Rubin Jordan, Assistant Fire Chief.
Fields served as the Albany Fire Department's 10th Fire Chief from 1991 to 2000.
