VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

The Valdosta Fire Department is recognizing its female firefighters in an effort to show that they are just as important as male firefighters.

The department currently has four female firefighters. Three of them worked on Monday to help in the wake of a tornado that hit.

The female firefighters say they're no different than the male firefighters and they can respond in the exact same way when called upon. "When you go into a fire scene or whatever's going on, you're expected to be able to pull your weight just as well as the guys," said Firefighter Tangela Rowe.

The fire department said it is actively working to recruit and maintain more female firefighters.
