DAWSON, GA (WALB) - The Terrell County NAACP held its annual proclamation celebration at the Sardis Baptist Church in Dawson on Thursday.
The event celebrated the Emancipation Proclamation issued in 1863, freeing slaves in Confederate states during the Civil War.
The president of the Terrell County NAACP says the struggle for equality continues today.
"We have a long ways to go. Some of us are out of slavery physically, but mentally we still are in slavery and we're trying to free the minds," said Terrell County NAACP President Ezekial Holley.
This year's keynote speaker was Mayor Christopher Wright who is serving his second term.
