LOWNDES CO., GA (WALB) - The Lowndes County Sheriff's Office is looking forward to using its new safety equipment to help with their increased patrols on New Year's Eve.
The sheriff's office is the coordinating agency for the 38 agencies that make up Georgia's Southern Region Traffic Enforcement Network and was able to purchase the equipment through a grant from the Governor's Office of Highway Safety.
Lowndes County Sheriff's Office Lieutenant Mike Adams said their number of DUI arrests has gone up five percent since they got the equipment. "The equipment is definitely gonna produce more arrests [on New Year's Eve] and I pray less wrecks and injuries tonight," said Lt. Adams.
The sheriff's office will be increasing its patrols and DUI enforcement from 3 p.m. Wednesday through 3 p.m. Thursday.
