ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Christmas is a time to spend with family, but for Albany fire fighters, work is their home away from home.
Michael Burns of AFD says it's during the holidays when the relationships between fellow firefighters grow. He feels by making those connections, it helps not only generate stronger friendships, but the ability to work more efficiently on the job.
Burns says once you learn your team members personality it helps predict how you go out into the field. It's the line of work that they risk their life for every day.
"So, I mean as far as a festive day. We try to make the best of it, we are away from our families but we have made a new family here; our lives depend on one another."
"I'm willing to fight fires with these guys. We pretty much live together for three days. I mean we get calls for Christmas because of all the traveling especially with this weather we've been having . People need us and we're here for them," said Albany firefighter Brian Baggett
Firefighters also want to remind you to be safe while celebrating. So, check smoke alarm batteries and practice safe cooking habits.
