VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

Valdosta Police officers were busy on the streets Tuesday, but not because there was a lot of crime.

Officers took time to surprise random children and families in some of the city's lower income areas by delivering toys and gifts to them.

The officers want to help kids have a happier holiday, but also spread a positive message to the community about the police department. "We are human just like anybody else. We want them to know that we're here to help if they need somethin'; not just for a bad purpose but also good," said Officer Shantaya Herring.

Officers also stopped and handed out toys to children and families they saw walking down the street.
