VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - Most of the residents displaced by a fire at a Valdosta nursing home were allowed to move back in Friday.
64 elderly residents were displaced from their apartments at the Azalea Towers Senior Living Facility when a fire broke out there early Thursday morning. The majority of the damage was contained to one apartment on the ground floor of building 101.
Property manager Lori Turner said Friday she was thankful for all the help from the community. "It was a cold night and the Red Cross stepped right in. They provided the blankets that we needed, shelter from Morningside Baptist Church.," said Turner. "Everybody worked really, really well together to see that this got carried through. It was really nice."
The cause of the fire is being blamed on careless smoking. The nursing home didn't know Friday when the damaged apartment would be repaired.
