Antique desk helping raise money for South Georgia charities

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - A desk valued at $16,000 could be yours for just $5.

Raffle tickets were on sale Friday for an antique Wooton Desk being raffled off by the Community Depot in Valdosta. 100 percent of the ticket sales will be donated to the three charities associated with the Community Depot: Valdosta-Lowndes County Humane Society, American Red Cross, and Easter Seals.

A citizen donated the desk to the depot about a year ago and the depot has been trying to figure out what to do with it ever since. "The question became, 'well, how do we use it to the best effect?' because our whole mission is to raise money for the charities. So, this was the best way we could figure out," explained Community Depot's Executive Director Ralph Jackson.

The Valdosta-Lowndes County Humane Society said this raffle will be a great help for them. "We're a non-profit...we have cats here, we also have dogs that are in foster homes. So, it helps all the animals, it really does," said Candice Wakefield, with the Humane Society. "It's very beneficial."

The raffle winner will be announced on December 23rd, and tickets can be purchased until then.

You can purchase a ticket at the Community Depot, located at 1602 N. Ashley Street, or by visiting http://www.communitydepot-valdosta.org/.
